Go Northwest to a magnificent cruising area, the San Juan Islands. Most people picture the Pacific Northwest as cool and rainy, but these islands northwest of Seattle are in the lee of 3 different mountain ranges that produce a wonderful microclimate!  Called the “Banana Belt” they receive less rainfall than Miami or New England, and have a very comfortable temperature range.  The San Juan are comprised of hundreds of islands ranging from small. rocky outcrops to large, forest-covered mountains.  Wildlife is plentiful – we may see anything from migratory birds and deer, to seals, sea lions, orcas and whales.

This 5-day powerboating course will combine hands-on SEA SENSE instruction – boat handling, tides and currents, navigation, docking and anchoring -with gorgeous scenery and abundant wildlife.  These tried and proven coastal cruising courses let you hone existing skills while learning new ones in an incomparable setting.

A little free publicity for Sea Sense Boating … I spent Sunday through Friday with Capt Carol Cuddyer and Capt. Jill McCarthy as instructors, and Diana as my fellow student, on a 42′ Californian power yacht.  I came away with a new confidence in my ability to drive, dock and anchor a boat.  I can read a chart, plot a course.  I know the Rules of the Road, I can navigate through crab pots, various markers, and how to use the radio.  Of course, I have much to learn yet but I’m ready to partner with my husband in life aboard a boat!  I highly recommend this company – owned by and operated by women, both licensed captains, extremely knowledgeable and very patient.  Carol owns the company with Patti and they have been doing the teaching, moving boats all over (including in other parts of the world), readying folks for handling their own boats for well over 20 years.  Love them, love what they do!   Gena

“Hi Patti & Carol,
I watched a captain show a couple new to boating the basics today about docking and boat handling. I was impressed watching her the entire day as the Carver went in and out of the marina. Later, I heard her mention she was from St. Petersburg, and I called out if she was from Sea Sense. Of course! It was Captain Laura Nelson. It was great fun watching a pro teach a couple who at the moment know very little but got a lot of information today. The woman docked the boat several times and I could hear your voices in my head: “Go slow, nothing bad happens at idle speed.” Sandy, the wife, now wears her yellow Sea Sense T-shirt. Classic. Best regards to you both.”
