Private Boating
Instruction
As featured on NBC's Today
Show, in the "New York Times" and MSNBC.com
This personalized private
instruction comes to you, wherever you have your boat. Learn
what you need to know to handle YOUR boat safely and
comfortably. Lessons are custom-tailored to meet your needs,
on your boat, in your harbor, for individuals, couples or
groups. Spend your day learning docking and close quarters
maneuvering, helmsmanship, boat systems, line handling or
electronics – it’s your choice. Starting at $400 per day, this is the best
investment you can make for your peace of mind and the
safety of your vessel and your crew.
TEACHING DELIVERIES on sailboats or powerboats – an
expansion of our renowned "On Your Own Boat©" courses. This
instruction is designed for many applications, including
teaching someone who has just bought a boat how to take it
from the point of purchase to their home port. It works
equally well for those contemplating a trip to a new
cruising ground.
Have you been thinking about a
long distance passage and never made a voyage of that
length, or run the Intracoastal Waterway, or been offshore?
We’ll put a Coast Guard licensed, Sea Sense Instructor aboard
your boat to teach and consult with you with respect to your
plans and decisions every step of the way.
Many different situations can be encountered on any passage,
be it two days or two weeks duration. Each new occurrence
will be used as a teaching tool, from tides and currents in
different areas to entering new harbors, dealing with
traffic, learning about channel markers and planning the
next day’s run.
Planning and achieving cruising goals are the point of this
course, with emphasis on teaching you how to make the
necessary decisions to be able to do-it-yourself, and send
you on your way safely and confident in your own ability.
You’ll be issued a certificate, which will make your
insurance company smile.

"We have met many boaters who
for one reason or another have not yet traveled the
Intracoastal Waterway or gone out the inlet. This course will give them the knowledge and
confidence to take that next step!" said Capt. Carol Cuddyer,
co-founder of SEA SENSE.
During the week-long course, participants will learn boat
handling in the Intracoastal Waterway,
the strategy of running inlets, safety and
equipment, filing of float plans, and preparation of boat
and crew for extended cruising. There will be instruction in
navigation, log keeping, watch standing,
weather, fuel management, vessel identification, and rules
of the road. This course will actively involve the
participants in the decision-making process for a long
cruise including how to plan for and deal with potential
problems. Any
offshore legs are weather dependent.
The professional Captains at Sea Sense have taught and sailed
extensively up and down the East Coast, the Caribbean, the
Mediterranean, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Labrador,
Bermuda, Mexico and Transatlantic crossings aboard trawlers.
Class size is limited. Call for dates and details.

We get mail about couples' instruction:
"Thanks so very much for taking the fear out of boating for me.
My husband thanks you too…you are simply the best!" Linda
"You are a great teacher! Just who we all needed. Thanks for
your calm patient manner – it made it easy and fun! Wish we had
done it sooner." Elaine & Bob
"Bill & I truly believe your class really changed our lives -
and not just on the boat! It really allowed us to be true
“partners” and that transfers from time on the boat to time at
home as well. And from a purely practical point of view, having
the physically stronger spouse handling lines makes so much
sense. Helmsmanship is so much “finesse.” We’re starting to
think about chartering in other parts of the world - something
we certainly would never had considered before my training."
Jeanne
"We found Sea Sense! Captains Patti Moore and Patti Lanphear
were incredible. They gave us the basics and by the time we
finished with them we were pretty much convinced that boating
was something we wanted to do. They were patient, considerate
and thorough. We bought a 49’ Grand Banks motoryacht. Last year
Margy and I spent 144 days on board. My wife does most of the
steering. When she docks our boat she gets applause and praise
from other boaters and dockhands. The last time a mariner was
onboard, he commented that he wish he could handle the boat as
well as she does. We give out Sea Sense business cards at any
opportunity, stressing that we are beneficiaries of absolutely
great instruction. Excellent training gave us the skills and
confidence necessary for our concept of boating." Gates &
